Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Engineer (SQL Server) to design, implement, optimize, and manage our SQL Server database infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in database architecture, performance tuning, automation, and high availability solutions. This role requires collaboration with development, QA, and IT teams to ensure the database environment is secure, scalable, and aligned with business goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Database Design & Architecture
- Design, develop, and maintain complex SQL Server databases.
- Define and implement database models, schemas, and indexing strategies.
- Design database structures and schemas based on business requirements.
- Performance Tuning & Optimization
- Analyse and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and indexing strategies.
- Monitor database performance using tools like SQL Profiler, Extended Events, and DMVs.
- Implement partitioning, caching, and execution plan optimization to improve efficiency.
- Database Deployment and Integration
- Build and deploy database systems for new applications.
- Ensuring seamless integration with front-end and back-end systems.
- Collaborate with developers to implement APIs for database access.
- Database Maintenance and Monitoring
- Monitoring database systems for performance, uptime, and availability.
- Addressing incidents and alerts related to database health.
- Performing routine maintenance tasks like backups and recovery testing.
- Work closely with application developers to optimize database interactions.
- Provide production support, troubleshoot database issues, and participate in on-call rotations.
- Document database processes, architecture, and troubleshooting guides.
- Database Administration & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and upgrade SQL Server instances in on-premises and cloud environments.
- Manage database security, user access controls, and compliance policies (RBAC, encryption, auditing).
- Develop and enforce database backup, recovery, and retention policies.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience as a Database Engineer/Administrator (SQL Server).
- Expertise in SQL Server 2016/2019/2022, T-SQL, and query optimization.
- Strong knowledge of indexing, partitioning, and performance tuning techniques.
- Experience with PowerShell, T-SQL scripting, or automation tools.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for database deployments (e.g. Redgate).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Hands-on experience with high-availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions.
- Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
Preferred:
- Experience with cloud-based SQL Server solutions (AWS RDS).
- Familiarity with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Redis) is a plus.
